W.O. Wainwright was born in England in 1858. He served as an officer during the Boer War and was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Service Cross, the British equivalent of the U.S. Medal of Honor
Between 1914 and 1921, he worked as a war correspondent for The Daily Mail and The Daily Express, and as a deputy assistant director of propaganda for Lord Kitchener's Imperial War Office during World War I. In 1936 he became a British citizen at age sixty-eight and returned to London where he lived until his death in 1948.
