He became the city editor of the paper in 1914 and moved to Toronto with his family in 1916. In Toronto, he was executive assistant to Governor General Lord Byng of Vimy Ridge fame, writing the biography of the governor general for publication. His political experiences led him to join the Canadian government as an official war correspondent, covering events such as the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Armistice Day celebrations in 1918. He served as president of Leonard & Macdonald Publishers (1923-1930) and president (1930-1941) of Macdonald-McGraw-Hill (1925-1930), which later became McGraw Hill Ryerson Ltd.

In 1942 he was appointed chairman of Great Lakes Paper Company, a position he held until his retirement in 1953. In April 2007, Mattel released a three-day action figure line based on his book "Think and Grow Rich". The line included a figure based on Hill himself as well as a figure based on Hill's mentor, Napoleon Hill.
