After the war, Mr. Guarnere was called to testify about his wartime experiences before the U.S. Congress which eventually led to his becoming one of only two surviving members of the famous "D-Day Dodgers" who were awarded the Congressional Silver Medal for their participation in Operation Overlord.

Mr. Guarnere also received two other Congressional Medals of Honor for his actions during WWII and was honored as a Distinguished Member of the Armed Forces of World War II by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and by President George H.W. Bush in 1989.
