Wang Shi was born in the year of the pig in a family of a landlord, an official and a tailor. His childhood was passed in a pampered environment. Later on, Wang Shi studied at the Beijing Foreign Languages Institute and began to write plays. In 1949, he joined the Communist Party of China and became a member of the Communist Youth League
He was sent to participate in the Chinese National Defense Education University, where he received training in Marxist-Leninist ideology and political theory. Wang Shi then went to work for the Chinese Central Television (CCTV) as an announcer and presenter before becoming its director in 1974.
