Walter Houser Brattain was born in 1895 in Troy, Alabama and died in 1976 in California. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1916 and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1922. In 1938, Brattain discovered the phenomenon of tunneling in semiconductors after reading a letter written by physicist John Bardeen to physicist William Shockley. In 1951, Brattain worked with John Bardeen and Walter Houser Anderson on a transistor. The following year, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work in physics.
