Born in New York City, Gallwey was educated at the University of New Hampshire, where he received his B.A. in English in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended the University of Iowa, where he received his M.A
in English Literature in 1952. He also attended Princeton University's Graduate School of Education and taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, and DePauw University before joining the faculty of Harvard Business School as an associate instructor of management education in 1960. In 1955 Gallwey wrote The Inner Game of Tennis (originally published as The Inner Game of Tennis: How to Use the Mental Skills for Success on Grass and Clay), which became a classic reference on sports psychology; it has now been translated into nine languages and has sold more than five million copies worldwide.
A version for golf has also been published under another title (The Inner Game of Golf: An Exact Science for Staying in the Stable). His other books include The Inner Game of Leadership (1990), The Inner Game of Music (1993), The Inner Game of Love (1996), The Inner Game of Money (2001), and The Inner Game of Work (2002).
