Leverrier's calculations for Uranus' orbit were published in 1837, six years after Herschel's discovery. Leverrier played a major role in the discovery of Neptune. In 1846, he calculated that Uranus' orbit would bring it near the Sun in 1851.

This prediction was confirmed by Edward J. Lowell, who discovered Neptune on September 23, 1846. Leverrier died on October 25, 1848.
