Tyrtaeus was a Greek lyric poet of the 6th century BC, known primarily for his poems in elegiac couplets that celebrate the Spartan victories against the Persian Empire. Tyrtaeus was also the author of a collection of poems called the Etymologicum Magnum, which contains what are presumed to be older Greek genealogies. Tyrtaeus is thought to have died around 545 BC. His poetry has been translated into many languages, including English.
