After the war, he graduated from Kansas University with a degree in drama and began his career as a radio and television actor. He was an award-winning early pioneer of electronic media and founded the first television station in Salina before moving to Hollywood to pursue a film career. For four decades, he was a writer and producer at Universal Studios, producing such films as "The Ten Commandments," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein," "Creature from the Black Lagoon," "King Kong," and many others.

For years he wrote radio commentaries for such programs as "The Adventures of Superman," "Perry Mason," and "Dragnet." As a screenwriter he wrote such films as "Diamond Head" and "The Lusty Men," both for director Jack Arnold. His television credits include: "Gunsmoke," "Lassie," and "77 Sunset Strip." After retiring from Hollywood in 1976, he moved to San Diego where he spent most of his time writing books about Hollywood's Golden Age of filmmaking. He died on February 4, 1985 at age 70 after suffering for several months from cancer that had metastasized into his brain.
