T.P. Louise was born in Harlan, Kentucky. In addition to being a poet and playwright, she was a frequent contributor to the New York Times and other publications. Her first book of poetry, The Heart Is a Fierce Master, was published in 1954
It won the Poetry Society of America's Deems Taylor Award and was a Book of the Month Club selection. Louise also wrote several short stories that were published in magazines and anthologies. She died in 1982 after a long struggle with cancer.
