Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma, Italy, on May 6, 1867. His family name was originally Conti, but was changed to Toscanini when his father changed his surname from Conti to Toscanini. He was the son of a musician and a teacher of music at a local conservatory. He began conducting while still a teenager and had an early taste of success
He was a music teacher at a school in Ferrara and at the conservatory in Parma before being named conductor of the new Parma Opera Company in 1888. In 1891, he became director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and conducted it for almost 30 years. In 1918, he began conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra in New York, where he remained until 1946.
