Tom Leveen was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He received his Ph.D. in 1965 from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. After an eleven-year stint at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville he joined the faculty of SMU's Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas, where he taught for thirty-four years
He is currently professor emeritus at SMU and serves as adjunct professor at the University of North Texas College of Law.
