Thor Heyerdahl was an Arctic explorer, ethnologist, anthropologist and archaeologist. He was the only person to have conducted three major oceanic expeditions, the first in 1947-1948, the second in 1955-1956, and the third in 1958-1962. Heyerdahl died on 3 December 1993 at age 82 while traveling in Peru.
