Thomas McFarland has been a teacher of physical education and physical development since 1969. In 1974, he was the recipient of the outstanding physical education instructor award from the National Association for Physical Education. He has been a member of the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Sport from its inception, and served as chairman from 1983 to 1988. McFarland is a graduate of Purdue University with a BA in Exercise Physiology and a master's degree in Exercise Science
