Thomas Fowell Buxton was a nineteenth century English social reformer and a member of the Fabian Society. He was a close friend of Charles Dickens and an early advocate of free education for all. In 1868, he wrote the influential book An Elementary Education for All, in which he argued that an equitable education system would create a fairer society. In 1874, Buxton published a utopian novel, New Grub Street, in which the author used his ideas about education to create a satire of Victorian life.
