Thomas B. Costain was an English writer who worked for many years as a journalist and novelist, eventually becoming best known for his historical fiction. Born in 1883, he wrote the first of his novels at age 16, and served with the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I. He was wounded three times and awarded the Military Cross for bravery
After the war he became a journalist and later also worked as an advertising copywriter before turning to fiction full-time. He lived in London for most of his life. Costain was twice married and had two daughters.
