Her father died when she was only ten years old. Her mother had some success as a writer, but had to give up her literary career for lack of money. After some time spent in New York, she moved to Santa Clara, California, where she wrote what became one of her best-known works, The Spy, or Romance of the Mountain Ranch.

Susan was an avid reader and student throughout her life. She graduated from Stanford University in 1875 with a B.A. degree, after which she went on to teach school for two years.

She then attended Yankton College of Law in South Dakota where she graduated with her LL.B. degree in 1878.
