Jackson was born in 1782 in Virginia and graduated from the College of William and Mary (Class of 1802) and the United States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1804). He served in the United States Army for more than 40 years, achieving the rank of major general. He was wounded three times and received the Medal of Honor. He fought in such battles as Monocacy, at Antietam, and at Gettysburg, where he was mortally wounded on July 2, 1863.
