Stephen Douglas was born in Springfield, Vermont on August 11, 1813. He died in New York City on April 7, 1858. During his life, he held a variety of political posts in Illinois and Minnesota. In 1856, he commenced a political career by running for the United States Senate from Illinois and was elected in November of that year
He served in the Senate from 1857 to 1859. He was a soldier in the Mexican War and the Civil War and was wounded at South Mountain and Antietam. Douglas established the first law office in Illinois after statehood and practiced law until his death.
