Stanley Kramer was born in New York City in 1910 to Jewish parents. His family moved to Philadelphia when he was six, and he attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in engineering in 1933. While there, he began writing for the campus newspaper. In 1935, he made his film debut as a writer for the movie "Love Your Neighbor." He later worked for several years as an editor at Esquire magazine
In 1943, he joined the United States Army Air Forces and served in World War II as a combat cameraman. After the war ended in 1945, Kramer returned to writing for Esquire, where he remained until 1951. Kramer then resumed producing films with his own company, Stanley Kramer Productions.
