St. John of the Cross was a Spanish mystic, poet, and Catholic priest. He is sometimes referred to as Doctor Mirabilis (Latin for "miracle worker"). He was the founder of the Theatines, a religious congregation of priests
St. John was born in 1542 in Osuna, Spain. He entered the Jesuit order at the age of 14 and studied medicine at Alcala before joining the Order's mission to Asia.
St. John died at Manila on July 17, 1591.
