He taught English at Brooklyn College for nine years before becoming an editor at Simon & Schuster. His first novel, The Warrior in Me, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1958 and won the National Book Award for fiction. His other works include the novels Reunion (1960), which won the National Book Award in 1961; The Rabbi of Lud (1965); A New Earth (2007), which won the National Book Award in 2008; and A Discovery of Witches (2011).

Yurick died on February 24, 2012.
