Sojourner Truth (August 13, 1797 – November 27, 1883) was an American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in New York State and escaped at the age of 21. After making her way to freedom, she devoted herself to the cause of black equality and women's rights, especially through her work as a preacher and activist. In her later years, Truth became a noted speaker and lecturer on African-American history and civil rights.
