Simeon Kondev was born in the village of Kalofer, a small town in the Thrace region of Bulgaria. He studied literature and philosophy at Sofia University and joined the Communist Party at the age of 18. At the age of 24 he was arrested and imprisoned on his return from a visit to China. After many months on death row, he was executed by a firing squad on May 25, 1950. His posthumously published novel, "The Stone of Sisyphus," is widely considered one of the finest Bulgarian novels ever written and has been translated into several languages.
