She began her acting career in New York at age 19 when she was discovered by a young agent named Leland Hayward, who later became her husband. Her Broadway debut was in "The Man in the White Suit" (1951), for which she won an Obie award. She starred in the film version of the Broadway hit "My Sister Eileen," for which she received her first Academy Award nomination (for Best Actress).

Her other film credits include "Reds" (1981) and "Steel Magnolias" (1989).
