Shams of Tabriz is a writer, editor and translator. His first book, The Gardens of Medina: Gardens of the Prophet and the City that He Built was published by Penguin/Random House in May 2008 and has since been translated into thirteen languages. It is an original, non-fiction account of the city, its people and their gardens. This book won the 2009 Best Book Award from the Association for Middle Eastern Studies in America
In 2010, he founded a non-profit organization, The Gardeners of Medina Foundation. His other books include the memoir How I Tamed a Persian Cat (2007) and two novels, Moth Smoke (2005) and The Desolate Land (2007). He is also a poet and a member of The Academy of American Poets.
