Although Fijacion Oral Vol. 2 did not match the commercial success of its predecessor, it has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was followed by a compilation album entitled Greatest Hits: Versiones Acústicas (2004) and her fourth studio album, Vita (2006).

Both albums achieved worldwide success; Greatest Hits: Versiones Acústicas reached double platinum certification in the United States while Vita has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. In 2008 Shakira became an ambassador for UNICEF and has participated in several UNICEF events.
