Samuel Martin was born in 1794 and died in 1857. After leaving school, he became a ship's carpenter and later a seaman. He was a sailor on various expeditions and at the age of thirty-two he left England and lived for twelve years in the West Indies. Also during this period, Martin wrote about his experiences, which he called Voyage Round the World, which was published in 1829
He then returned briefly to England before resuming his travels. In 1839 he went to America where he worked as a journalist and also published two books: The World's Great Men of History (1839) and Explorations of the Valley of the Amazon (1840). Martin again returned to England in 1845; but this time he remained there for most of his life.
