Samuel Crompton (1757 – 1798) was an English inventor and writer. Born in Great Yarmouth, Suffolk, England, he was the son of a carpenter. He was apprenticed to a cabinet maker but became interested in mechanics and later worked as a surveyor at the Woolwich Arsenal, where he met Benjamin Martin. Together they went to Egypt to survey the canals which had been built there by the Pasha of Egypt
When they returned the brothers set up the firm of Crompton and Martin, cabinet makers and joiners in Norwich, their native city. In 1783 John's brother Samuel joined them as a partner.
