Sammy Cahn was born in New York City in 1914. After studying music at Juilliard, he worked as a songwriter. By the early 1940s, he had become one of the most successful lyricists in the business. Over the next three decades, he wrote lyrics for hundreds of movies, television shows, and Broadway musicals, including some of the biggest hits of the 1950s and 1960s, such as "Mack The Knife" (from The Threepenny Opera), "Blues in the Night" (from Guys and Dolls) and "Strangers in the Night" (from Brigadoon)
He won an Academy Award for his lyrics to "True Love" from the movie Skylark. He continued to write music and lyrics into his 80s. He died at age 100 in 2002.
