Rudolf C. Binding, M.D., was a German-born psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, who is considered to be one of the founders of modern psychoanalysis. He came from a conservative bourgeois family and was educated at the Universities of Leipzig and Jena, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1870. He went on to become a professor of psychiatry at the University of Breslau (1872–1890)
In 1893 he left Germany for South America, where he worked as a psychiatrist in Colombia from 1893 to 1894. In 1894 he returned to Germany, where he became a private practice doctor until his death in Berlin on July 25, 1932.
