Ronnie Gilbert was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1945. Her family moved to the West Coast when she was a child. Ronnie graduated from Beverly Hills High School and attended Mills College in Oakland, California where she received a B.A. in Sociology
In the 1960s she worked as a professional dancer, a writer for "The San Francisco Chronicle", and an actress on the daytime series "One Life to Live". In 1970 Ronnie moved to Florida where she taught dance at the University of Central Florida for many years. In 1984 Ronnie founded the Dance Theatre of Orlando, which became one of the most successful dance companies in the country.
Today the Dance Theatre of Orlando has performed over 4,000 productions in 28 states and five countries.
