In 1933 he entered Yale University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. In 1936 he received a Master's degree from Harvard University. In 1938 he married Kay Kaiser who was also involved in Human Relations Training.

They had two children, Roberta and Nancy. Allen worked for the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation until 1942 when he entered the Army Air Corps as a lieutenant pilot during World War II. After the war he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for graduate work in 1946, but left to become Director of Training at MIT's School of Education in 1947, where he remained until his retirement in 1974.

Roland Allen joined the United States Army Air Corps Reserve while serving at MIT and became an officer while active duty during World War II. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1950 with the rank of major general. During that time, Dr.

Allen wrote numerous articles for military journals which were published under his name, but also under "Anonymous." Allen died on October 5, 2000 at the age of 90.
