Roger I'Estrange was a professional author, poet, and editor. He published a variety of books with his own press, including a novel, a collection of poems, and a volume of political writings. Born in London in 1831, I'Estrange moved to New Zealand in 1848 with his wife and children. In 1852 he published his first book, A Grammar for the Young (1852), followed by A Book for Young Children (1854), A Narrative of the Cruise of the 'Sylph' (1856), and Eclogues (1859)
He was awarded three gold medals at the South Australian Exhibition for his writing and illustrations.
