After graduating from high school, he worked as a reporter for the Daily Journal in Covington, Kentucky, and later as a copy boy at the "Cincinnati Times-Star". He moved to New York City in 1928 to work for The Morning Telegraph. While there he met his future wife, Eileen Yeager (1903--1968).
Together they had two children: Margaret (b. 1920) and John (b. 1925).
In New York he wrote articles for the American Weekly and the Writer's Digest before joining the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was discharged at the rank of Technical Sergeant.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with Eileen Yeager (April 15, 1903 – May 18, 1968), who died on May 18, 1968 after suffering a heart attack exactly five years to the day after her husband's burial at Arlington National Cemetery with him on May 16, 1955.
