The Foundation is named after its founder who was severely injured in a diving accident at age 17, which resulted in the loss of the use of both arms and one leg (he was born without a right hand). When he started his career he had difficulties meeting the challenge of learning new skills, but with hard work and determination he became one of America's most successful businessmen, investing in technology at Bell Labs for over fifty years. However, in the 1980s he became disillusioned with his company's focus on computerization at the expense of human contact.

He left Bell Labs to become President of the Robert M. Drake Foundation which provides individuals with disabilities an opportunity to experience life as an individual rather than pre-programmed into someone else's system. The Foundation provides scholarships for people with disabilities to attend colleges throughout the United States. RMD also supports innovative programs at universities throughout the country that are designed to give people with disabilities greater independence and independence in their daily lives.

The Foundation has established an annual scholarship program that awards twenty-five annual scholarships at colleges throughout northern New Jersey to students who are pursuing degrees in science, mathematics, engineering, computer science, architecture or medicine. The Foundation also supports five regional centers around New Jersey which provide opportunities for students with disabilities to gain experience working in the field they wish to enter before continuing their education or entering the workforce full-time. These centers include The Center for Employment Opportunities in West Orange; The Center for Employment Opportunities in Whippany; The Center for Employment Opportunities in Newark; The Center for Employment Opportunities in Teterboro; and The Center for Employment Opportunities in East Hanover. The Foundation has also supported innovative programs at three universities throughout New Jersey which are designed to give people with disabilities greater independence and independence in their daily lives: Rutgers University's Newark Center; Princeton University's Harkness Center; and Columbia University's Center for Independent Living (CIL).
