Robert Harbison was a British author and publisher known for his biographies of prominent figures in the history of the United States. He was born in London, the son of a physician from Liverpool. As a young man, he began writing short stories, using the pen name "R. D
Hill." In 1878 he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, but continued writing and worked as a journalist. In 1894 he married Jessie Bell-Browne, with whom he had three children. He died in London on March 14, 1944.
