Robert Clairmont began his career in the field of statistical analysis in 1965 at Bell Labs, where he worked on a variety of projects during his twenty-seven years there. In the early 1970s, he started writing for "Scientific American" and was a member of its Editorial Board from 1975 to 1985. In 1985, he joined the staff of the American Statistical Association, where he worked until his death in 1999, while continuing to write his weekly column for "Scientific American". He is credited with having established a new type of statistical analysis called "Fuzzy Logic" which eliminated the need for mathematical proofs.
