Richard Rolle was born in Horsham around 1290, around the time of the Black Death. His remains are preserved in Canterbury Cathedral, where his tombstone describes him as "the greatest theologian who ever lived." He was a major influence on Thomas Aquinas, who referred to him as his master. He is probably best known for the love poems he wrote to his wife Clare. They were written by a man in love, for a woman in love, not the product of an idealized fantasy
