Raymond Postgate was born in London and educated at Oxford University. He began his scientific career as a demonstrator and fellow of Physiology at the University of Cambridge and then as a research assistant to Harold Warris Thompson at the National Institute for Medical Research. In 1940 Postgate joined the Birmingham Medical School as a lecturer in physiology. He was appointed professor of physiology in 1945 and held this position until his retirement in 1972.
