Ray Harryhausen was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1920. He attended the University of Southern California on a scholarship, graduating with an engineering degree. He became a special effects animator for the Walt Disney Studios in California in 1941. By 1953 he had created many of the effects in the landmark film The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Although he was not credited in the film, he received the Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his work on Sinbad.
