Ray Charles, born Ray Charles Robinson, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and composer. As a blind and deaf child growing up in San Antonio, Texas, Charles learned to play the piano and guitar. Charles recorded his first album in 1959 at the age of 19 and released it under the name Ray Charles and his 5 Rhythmmen. He was rechristened Ray Charles in 1961 by Atlantic Records owner Ahmet Ertegun.
