Ralph Watson was born in 1901 in the town of Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire, England. Watson was an associate editor at the Birmingham Post from 1935 to 1938, and then became editor of the News Chronicle. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the army, serving throughout Europe and North Africa. He returned to journalism in 1947 when he became editor of The Sunday Telegraph
In 1948 he moved to Australia to take up a position as general manager of The Age newspaper. Watson died in Melbourne on 19 July 1978.
