Ralph Linton is the son of a Presbyterian minister and a Methodist schoolteacher. He was born in Iowa on August 10, 1892. His secondary school education was at the University of Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1915 and his Master of Arts degree in English in 1916. He was awarded honorary Doctorate degrees from the University of Northern Iowa (1943) and the University of Iowa (1948)
