R.A. McCandless was a prolific writer of children's literature. Among his other works was The Third Policeman, the first part of a three-part series featuring a detective called Bunbury. He also wrote a series of books featuring a character named Jack, starting with The Secret of the Old Clock and continuing with Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack and the Giant and Jack Gets Lost in Space
It is believed that he wrote at least eight books in all under this name. There were no other writers named "R.
