He was an engineer for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey from 1923 to 1929. He was an executive with the American Locomotive Company from 1929 to 1935, when he left to become a full-time author. His first novel, "A Game for God," published in 1935, became a best-seller and was later made into a movie starring Spencer Tracy and Ernest Borgnine.
