Pubudu Lasal Dissanayake was born in the village of Pererahena, Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka. He studied medicine at Peradeniya University, where he was awarded his B.A. degree in 1944. Following service as a medical officer with the Royal Air Force he returned to Sri Lanka to specialize in psychiatry at the Colombo General Hospital
He subsequently worked at Colombo Mental Hospital and the Puttalam Mental Hospital before settling down to practice psychiatric medicine in his own private practice in Colombo. During this period he published articles on psychiatry in leading journals of the day. In 1965 he became the first Asian President of the World Psychiatric Association, which position he held until 1969.
His books include The Psychology of Attribution (1962), The Social Basis of Psychiatry (1986), and The Mind-Body Connection (2004).
