Peter Lombard was born at Toulouse, France, on August 12, 1150. He was educated at Paris, where he received the degree of Master of Arts. He became a Christian before 1180, and on his journey to Rome for studies he spent some time in Spain. From there he went to England at the invitation of Lanfranc, the first Archbishop of Canterbury
He became a monk at St Albans Abbey near London, and later came to live at Clairvaux Abbey. He died at Fontevrault Abbey in 1274. His works are noted for their elegance of style and their depth of thought.
