Peter Dickinson was born in London in 1915. His family moved to the Chiltern Hills when he was eight years old. He spent his childhood roaming the hills and wooded valleys, learning to love nature and the village of High Wycombe. Peter left school at fifteen to join the Royal Marines, serving in a variety of capacities during World War II
After the war, he studied at Girton College, Cambridge, where he came under the influence of Sir Frank Fraser Darling. In 1950, Sir Frank Fraser Darling made him a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In 1953 Peter Dickinson married Gweneth Hilliard and they had two sons, Simon and Peter.Peter Dickinson continues to live in High Wycombe with his wife Gweneth and their two sons Simon and Peter.
