Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator, a social theorist and a writer. He was a great proponent of critical pedagogy - a theory which advocates for equality between students and teachers in the class. Freire's work has had a profound influence on education and social movements. In 1970 he founded the Center for Higher Learning in Education (CHLE) in Brazil, which promotes critical pedagogy and is the only educational institution to be named after him.
